‘Days Like These’ is a celebration of one of the most beautiful cars ever created, the Lamborghini Miura, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Alps and inspired by the carefree spirit of the opening scene to The Italian Job, and a recent road trip I took through the Dolomites.
Resisting the temptation to overwork the landscape, the Alps were made to play their role in providing a stage upon which the Miura could take the limelight.
I wanted the winding mountain road and distant tunnel to create a sense of adventure and maybe trigger a nostalgic film themed memory whilst always leading the eye back to the bright orange Lamborghini attacking the next corner.
For me, this painting captures those rare moments when everything seems perfectly aligned: an iconic car, an empty mountain road and the freedom to simply enjoy the journey.
Those are the days we remember.
And who doesn’t love a bit of trivia…
The Miura in the movie wasn’t driven by a stunt driver at all. Lamborghini sent one of its own salesmen, Enzo Moruzzi, who bolted test plates on the car and drove it more than 400 kilometers from Bologna up to Aosta. That Miura wasn’t a studio prop either. It was already sold to a customer, so Moruzzi unhooked the odometer to keep the trip off a brand new car. Watch those driving shots again and the speedometer needle never moves while the car climbs the Great St Bernard Pass. And the wreck the bulldozer shoves off the cliff? Different car. Lamborghini’s service department found a Miura that had been crashed beyond repair, pulled the engine out and sent the empty shell to the set. It breaks apart on the rocks with nothing inside it.
